MOORS UNDONE BY YET ANOTHER CONTROVERSIAL GOAL DECISION

Moorlands 1  Mickleover 3 - 26th January

You always know its not your day as a Manager when your team hammer the opposition in the first twenty minutes and know that you should be 4 goals up but you end the game on a 3-1 losing scoreline having conceded a killer third goal that defied the laws of the game. That Moorlands hit the post on 3 minutes Bridge flicking on Jennings delicate pass, but the ball flew across goal against the inside of the post and back into the arms of grateful keeper Tollerfield. Six minutes later Adam Gilbert rose to a free header from Robinsons corner but Wilson looked to be over the line when he cleared with Moorlands appealing for a goal. From the rebound Ryan Porter hit a screamer that Tollerfield tipped over the bar. Moorlands were all over the visitors and once again luck was not forthcoming with King's shot hitting the arm of a visiting defender but penalty appeals were turned down. Another chance went begging when Bridge was inches wide with a drive as Moorlands were just superb. With just 14 minutes gone King turned in the area and volleyed against the bar . The ball rebounded to the unmarked Mark Curtis who blazed over the bar. At long last Mickleover opened up the home defence and Phil McGann made a good low save from Holmes. Chesman then made a magnificent clearance off the line,  But on 22 minutes Moorlands got the deserved lead. Ryan Porter found King in space who strode forward to score.. As so often though the leader only lasted 5 minutes when a ball over the defence on 27 minutes allowed Middledich to score past Mcgann. £ minutes later Holmes again strode though and pushed the ball under the keeper for the second. It went from bad to worse as Moorlands lost Porter and Creane in quick succession to injuries and with the home side reeling Slater scored a controversial third. Holmes was off the pitch by the goal and as the ball came towards him he leaned into play and headed across for Slater to score despite correct protestations the goal should have been disallowed for offside. Moorlands were all at sea and McGann made two brilliant saves to keep the score line intact

Facing an uphill task the home team were pushing the visitors back into their own third of the pitch without causing problems although Gray hit a screamer from 25 yards inches over the bar. A goal at this stage would have made it interesting, especially as bridge was again brought down in the box but Referee Lawson gave the kick inches outside the box. . King was causing the defence problems with his skill and a free kick was curled just wide of a post as Moorlands were desperately trying to get back into the game. Gilbert then  was up for a Robinson corner and glanced narrowly wide as Moorlands just could not get the breakthrough. Gray again was set up for a good chance when Chesman delivered a great cross in but the shot was week.
Manager Dye was upbeat about the performance however, " The first twenty minutes we have done everything but score and then we have gone to sleep for 20 minutes. The third goal defies belief just how wrong the officials got it. Their player had to be seeking an advantage coming back onto the field and the law states that a offside decision should have been given. we are still among the bunch and plenty to play though"

Not as bad as it looked

Pickering Town 4  Moorlands 1 - 12th January 2008

Forget the scoreline of 4-1 as this was an unfair reflection of a solid performance that had Pickering often under pressure with chances going begging. Not for the first time this season a Referees decision was a turning point against Moorlands in a game where the players gave a good account of themselves. But when things are not going right nothing does. Rob Lund  Ryan Porter and Mark Curtis were missing through illness, but Adam Gilbert was passed as fit.
Early on Moorlands made the running and a jinking run from Craig Bridge beating 3 defenders ended with a free kick on the edge of the area. However Nick Robinson's kick was saved  by Kevin Martin easily. Phil McGann then had to be at his best to block the progress of Liam Salt before Bridge opened the scoring on 7 minutes. Shielding the ball well and running across the defence the forward unleashed a fine low drive beyond Martin. The lead was short-lived though as a minute later Mark Swales similarly drove low and wide of McGann to make it 1-1.
After the goal flurry the game settled into an end to end flow of passing without either side really causing defences any problems although Adam Gilbert had to make a fine interception to stop Salt in his tracks. McGann again had to be alert to stop Steve Baxter who was free in the area with Moorlands matching top side Pickering
The best move of the match saw Bridge who was causing all sorts of trouble interchange passes with Stuart King to set up Chris Gray who really should have really scored with his powerful drive. Another flowing move down the right had Keyworth and Matt Roche linking and Roche fired into the side netting. On the break Ryan Creane got his head to a goalbound effort from Greening sending the teams in all square

H/T  Pickering Town  1  Moorlands  1

Pickering were first out the blocks after the break and good defending by Creane allowed McGann to gather the ball in the six yard box. Once again bridge at the heart of all the Moorlands moves broke from a Roche lay off and his return was weakly hit by Roche at the keeper Gilbert was then cautioned for a late challenge before two minutes later the defender was harshly judged to have taken out greening in a 50/50 challenged and was dismissed. Manager Darren Dye was then sent from the dugout for comments made as the game threatened to briefly boil over. Moorlands were still battling hard not letting Pickering get into their stride and it was Bridge again who set up another great goalscoring chance for Chris Gray but the midfielder drove straight at the keeper. The miss proved costly as at the other end on 64 minutes the Referee saw an infringement in the area that no one else in the ground saw and point to the spot. Swales stepped up to score his second of the afternoon.. Shell shocked Pickering game forward again and Swales grabbed his hattrick on 66 minutes when the striker shot from 30 yards and McGann dived over the ball
The game looked all over yet bridge was still game for the fight and looked to score but his effort was blocked in front of goal. Pickering were searching for more and Jamie Chesman kicked off the line before Baxter shot across goal missing the target by inches. Robinson then had a fine effort tipped over the bar by martin and a freekick by the skipper was just wide of the mark. With two minutes remaining and Moorlands pushing up Baxter delivered a fine cross to the far post to Swales to score with a flying header to seal the victory.
against any other side Moorlands would have got something out of a fine battling performance but when the Gods deem its not your day its just not your day

Poor Show

Hallam 3  Moorlands 1 - 5th January 2008

Hallam completed a double over a lacklustre Moorlands side that really did not perform on a raw afternoon in Sheffield on a pitch that sloped as much as the hills in the background. Indeed some of the players seemed to be as sluggish as the virus that caused Ryan Porter to miss the trip and in truth no one came out with a great deal of credit. As early as the 5th minute the writing was on the wall as both Luke Jennings and Jamie Chesman were beaten down the left flank by James tevendale who cut inside to drive past Phil McGann for the opener. Rather than galvanize the visitors Moorlands could find no cohesion to their game with passes going astray and posing little threat up front. Hallam though were little better although O'Connell missed an easy chance for the second shooting across goal. But with 32 minutes gone Moorlands were left with a mountain to climb when Ryan O'Carrolll scored a fortunate second. His speculative effort from 35 yards caught McGann too far off his line and the keeper was only able to palm the ball into the top of the net. And from a Moorlands point of view that was it for the half with play scrappy from both sides and few positive openings made. Mat Roche did get free and Trueman blocked well but Moorlands were looking jaded.

H/T  Hallam  2  Moorlands 0

On the resumption with a few harsh words said in the dressing room Moorlands looked livelier with the pacey Mark Curtis on for out of sorts Jake Keyworth. The winger managed to get to the byeline but his cross lacked any quality and up to this point Moorlands had not had one testing shot on goal. Daniel Bent then was introduced try and liven up the forward line. Trueman was still not put under any pressure as Roche and Craig Bridge both scuffed half openings. and with Hallam content to hang onto their lead the affair was becoming dull. However with 25 minutes remaining Hallam should have gone further ahead . when Tevendale was adjudged to have been pulled down in the box, but the players tame spotkick was well saved by McGann. The keeper excelled again when Will Tomlinson broke down the right and shot across goal forcing McGann into a fine diving save to push the effort round the post. But the third finally arrived, this time Scott Bates a late substitute used his pace down the right flank and cut inside to finish powerfully under McGann's dive.
Moorlands did finally score a consolation goal with 2 minutes remaining from Chris Grays corner and Bridge scored a rare head glancing headed goal. The fact remained that Moorlands once again blew cold on a raw afternoon and must improve on their dismal away record if relegation is to be avoided as Brodsworth are still breathing down the neck

SWEET REVENGE AT HOME - 29th December

Sweet revenge indeed against Thackley for last Saturdays defeat and thus ensuring 2007 ended on a high and leaving manager Darren Dye looking forward to 2008 with a little breathing space from the bottom two Clubs. A surprise was also in store for fans with the return of favourite Rob Lund for the rest of the season. Dye also had to make several other changes with Ryan Creane and Adam Gilbert failing fitnesstests

The opening exchanges were entirely dominated by the home team as they settled into an attacking frame of mind, and little was seen of the visitors who were unable to break out of their own half. Skipper Nick Robinson was moving the ball about at will and fed Craig Bridge who drove wide of the post. Further pressure in a scrappy period of play saw Moorlands win a succession of corners but keeper Trueman was not severely tested. However on 25 minutes Bridge was hauled down just outside the area and the forward took the kick himself forcing trueman to save low to his right. Five minutes later another freekick in a similar position saw Lund drive against the wall and to safety with Moorlands well in command. The football was not sparkling but equally the defence of Porter Jennings Chesman and Lund were having little difficulty in keeping the Thackley forwards at bay. With just a minute to half time the home team deservedly scored the opener with a class goal. Moorlands were pressing hard and a quickly taken throw to Mat Roche was delivered into the six yard box to allow Stuart King (pictured above) to head home unmarked. This was no more than Moorlands deserved at the break

H/T  Moorlands 1 Thackley 0

After the break Moorlands maintained their grip of the game with Thackley having to rely on long ball breaks to get any where near the Moorlands area. Chances were few and far between at either end, although  a great ball in from Jennings found Porter at the far post and his head forward was missed by inches by King. Minutes later it should have been two when King again got the touch and the ball was cleared off the line.
With 60 minutes gone Moorlands were turning up the heat and Bridge superbly turned on the edge of the area and drove inches past the far post with Trueman stranded. The second goal was now becoming inevitable and it duly arrived on 74 minutes. Jake Keyworth won a great tackle in the centre circle and took the ball down the right flank and his precision ball across goal left Bridge (pictured right) with a simple slide in to tap the ball home to make it 2-0
However two minutes later Keyworth undid his previous good work by making a rash challenge in the area and Referee McGrath pointed to the spot. Danny Forrest gave McGann no chance with the spot kick and left Moorlands a nervous 15 minutes to play out. However the ever dependable Porter and Chesman were in no generous mood and despite their best efforts to get forward Moorlands were left to comfortably hold out.
Not a great performance but every game is a Cup tie now to inch their way up the table and with injured players returning the battle for places is hotting up

MOORLANDS UNDONE AT WINTERTON

Winterton’s promotion last season meant the return of the Boxing Day fixture for the first time since the nineties, and with it local rivals Lincoln Moorlands Railway. Both sides came into the game somewhat under strength.

The game was only 18 seconds old when Lincoln flashed a shot across the face before Rangers had a chance to organise. Rangers responded with a Northen turn and shot from close to force a save out of Phil Mcgann, before that it was tit-for-tat half chances as the game settled. Lincoln then suffered the loss of Adam Gilbert through injury on 13mins.

Four minutes later and Rangers produced a touch of class. Nathan Would’s superb cross-field pass to Clarke who stretched the Lincoln defence before cutting back and dropping he ball onto Adam Deakin back on the right who half-volleyed the ball into the net from 22yards. 1-0 17mins

Into twenty minutes and Lincoln twice created shooting chances. The industrious Craig Bridge forced a Ben Simpson save from a shot from the edge of the box on 23mins. And King had a half chance after Lincoln exposed the right flank.

Just past the half hour and a through ball for Andy Holt to chase what looked a great opportunity but his low drive squirmed under the body of the keeper only to stick to a trailing arm. 36mins. Two minutes later and Lincoln won a corner which was initially cleared but the ball back into the far post saw Jackson hold his line well as the attacker backed over him; one or two shouts for a penalty were comfortably waved away.

Then as the half closed a Dave Ricardo cross field pass was intercepted by Curtis and as Billy green closed he shot the wrong side of the far post. A great chance. Ricardo nearly made amends in injury time when he cut into the box after a good piece of Winterton keep-ball created his shooting opportunity which was blocked away.

HALF-TIME 1-0

Lincoln came out fighting for the second half and dominated the first ten minutes except for a great Rob Northen chance. A cross from Phil Jackson to the near post was inches too high for the Winterton leading scorer who was unmarked. 49mins.

On 58mins and Lincoln should have drawn level. A shot from the edge of the box deflected into the path of a Lincoln striker central in the 18 yard box, but Simpson somehow spread well to save with his legs. A minute later and Jackson again making inroads down the left was fouled near the edge of the box. The free kick into the far post saw Holt jump and miss and Would volley wide from an impossible angle.

Rangers started to look a little ragged as Lincoln pressed on. A lunging Ricardo tackle gave away a free kick on the left; the ball across the face was fired in only for a Rangers body to deflect it away. Goal scorer Deakin then had a double chance to put Rangers further ahead. A cross from Clarke on the right came to Deaks on the edge of the six, but he could only header the ball up, he reacted quickest but fired his shot across the face. 64mins.

Two minutes later and the impressive Stuart King again forced a save out of Ben Simpson.

Lincoln should have equalised on 74min. Colley lost possession in a central position, the ball played out to the right was fired into the box where a Lincoln striker fired wide from a great position but was falling away from the ball as he hit it. Then again King tested the mettle of Simpson with a turn and shot from inside the box that the Rangers keeper was equal to. 75mins.

Heavy Lincoln pressure continued. On 77mins a quick throw gave Lincoln another shooting chance but they fired across the face, a minute later and a rasping drive from just outside the box rattled the top of the bar. Rangers had had to hang on.

DEFENSIVE DISASTER AT THACKLEY - 22/12/07

This was far and away the worst display of the season and got the festive fixtures off to a bad start as moorlands succumbed to a less than impressive Thackley side but who were still able to rip an abject defence apart and score whenever they pressed forward. The statistic of 7 chances six taken says it all really and remarkably nearly every goal had a startling similarity about it that Thackley broke quickly leaving a leaden footed defence in its wake and leaving new keeper Phil McGann exposed.
The route started in the first minute when a break down the right side saw the ball passed inside to Danny Forrest who beat off tithe challenge to sidefoot home. Mark Curtis did his best to galvanise the visitors into action and his centre was met by Craig Bridge to fire just wide of the post. But the brief comeback was cut short as once again Thackley played the ball quickly out of defence to the pacy Nicky Mathews to run past Ryan Creane with ease and beat the advancing McGann on 12 minutes. Moorlands were having to push forward Curtis again fed Bridge on 14 minutes who drove across goal for Creane to atone and push the ball home to make it 2-1 and put Moorlands back in the game. However ten minutes later Mathews again got the better of Jamie Chesman and gave McGann no chance to put Thackley 3-1 up. Chesman was immediately substituted by Stuart King with Moorlands going three at the back, and King had a fine chance when from two yards out managed to hit the keeper as opposed to the back of the net and only winning the corner. Bridge who was working hard for Moorlands tried a volley from 25 yards out that flew just too high as Moorlands were applying pressure and camped in the home teams half but all too often the final ball lacked the killer touch. On the stroke of halftime a rare excursion up field saw Etienne head against McGanns post

H/T  Thackley 3 Moorlands 1

Thackley were still penned back  but once again broke free to go three goals in front. Chris Gray lost possession on the Thackley penalty area and was swiftly cleared up field where Ryan Porter misread the bounce and Mathews was allowed to run on and beat the advancing keeper to complete his hattrick. This knocked the stuffing out of Moorlands despite foraging forward through Bridge who had taken a battering from the home defenders all afternoon. Thackley were content to let Moorlands come to edge of their area but poor passing and the desire to want to walk the ball into the net was letting Dyes men down
But four became five on 81 minutes and it was that man Mathews took his tally to four this time Skipping past a lunging Creane challenge and again left McGann looking on with despair as the ball nestled in the back of the net. Two minutes later Stuart King did get one back for Moorlands arriving at the far post to slip the ball home, but it was left to home skipper Joel Etienne to complete the scoring as a corner was not cleared and the striker shot home from close range
A miserable afternoon all round giving Manager Darren Dye plenty to think about before the Boxing Day trip to leaders Winterton and the return with Thackley next Saturday at Newark Road

REFEREE TAKES CENTRE STAGE

Moorlands 3  Brodsworth 1 - 1st December

This victory over bottom side Brodsworth welfare was more notable for the performance of referee Martin Swift who managed, in a game that was far from aggressive in nature, for his 13 yellow cards and 3 dismissals. This was the worst official seen at Newark Road in years and will inevitably incur penalties from the Lincs FA. But it was not that sort of game. Indeed he set his own low standard in the second minute cautioning David Hone for kicking the ball three yards  away. In between however this was a game where the visitors took charge for the first fifteen minutes and then capitulated from then on although Moorlands themselves were not as fluid in their play as usual. In the opening stages Leigh Herrick was required to pull off a great save from Robert Sanderson and a fracas between several players was swiftly dealt with. Craig bridge did have a shot saved well by Jamie Allen on 12 minutes, but it was the long ball tactics of Brodsworth that were causing mark Hone returning from injury and Ryan Creane the problems with both players having their work cut out.. However, on 16 minutes the ball fell to Stuart King to drill the ball home for his first of the season and put Moorlands firmly in control. Allen then made a great save diving full stretch to keep out Mat Roche's header that looked a goal all the way. But the second was not far away and it duly arrived on 24 minutes when Roche headed wide of Allen for the second.
Two minutes later and it could have been three when Bridge netted from close range but his effort was disallowed for offside.  Brodsworth were now dejected and were only relying on long balls out of defence by now and King again might have scored but his shot was cleared off the line by a defender after a raking cross from bridge. In a rare attack Creane had to make a timely interception  but with a minute to go to the interval Moorlands scored the third. Bridge struck a powerful volley at Scott Pickles in the corner of the penalty area and the ball hit his hand. Referee Swift pointed to the spot and dismissed the hapless defender from the field. A truly harsh decision. Nick Robinson easily scored from the spot. At the whistle, Brodsworth players and Managers vented their feelings at the Officials with some justification

H/T  Moorlands 3 Brodsworth 0

The opening of the second period saw Moorlands comfortable with their lead but more drama erupted on 58 minutes when Moorlands David Hone was dismissed for deliberate Handball. One of the few correct decisions of the afternoon. Brodsworth were certainly putting themselves about but to no effect and the home defence was in little bother as the game was heading towards its inevitable conclusion although Moorlands were creating little of substance themselves. The non 72 minutes came dismissal number three. this time Gavin Cooper who had already been cautioned tackled Bridge and was immediately shown a second yellow and then a red card, much to the disgust of the visiting dugout. Barely a minute later Brodsworth did pull a goal back from Ryan Malee who shot across Herrick into the far corner of the net. The three goal difference could have been restored by Mat Roche who showed great pace to get down the left and his shot richoted off the outside of the post. Luke Jennings had another fine chance to wrap it up one on one with the keeper but Allen came off best.
Manager Darren Dye was pleased to take the points from the basement side and move up to 5th from bottom but the talking point was again an inept referee who spoke with the book out rather than talking to players

New signings inspire Moorlands at Nostell

Nostell Miners Welfare  2  Moorlands  3 - 24th Nov

Moorlands achieved their first league away win of the season at Nostell and in doing so inflicted the home teams first home league defeat despite their current bad form. Although the 3-2 scoreline looks close enough this was an emphatic victory as moorlands dominated the majority of the game. But oh so typical the players made it hard to themselves in the last 15 minutes by having to hang on as Nostell pressed forward to equalise
Manager Darren Dye was able to introduce four of his recent signings in the shape of mark Curtis Jake Keyworth and Ryan Creane along with David Hone finally secured from Spalding United. Indeed it was Hone who made his presence felt early on with a timely tackle on Oli Johnson as the forward burst into the area. However Bridge caused Nostell their first problem from Leigh Herrick's long kick but David Watts managed to head back to his own keeper. On 9 minutes Hone again was in the right place to clear off the line from David Nicholas with the game becoming an end to end affair. A minute later Nick Robinson restored to the line up hit a blistering freekick from 25 yards that was deflected just inches wide of the post with keeper Gavin Ansley stranded. Moorlands were well on top at this point and Luke Jennings showing good form of late burst down the right 60 yards but Nostell defended well. Mark Curtis who was working the left hand side centred for Bridge for the striker to turn and force Ansley into a fine save. The domination though finally paid off when the ball fell to Jake Keyworth twenty yards out and his volley was helped into the net by Mat Roche for a deserved lead. Nostell hit back however from a needlessly conceded corner taken short and David Nicholas put the ball into the net from close range
Bridge again causing problems for the home defence cut inside the defence and this time his powerful shot rose just above the cross bar. With 3 minutes to the break Moorlands again took the lead. Robinsons corner was not cleared by the defence and Bridge swiftly reacted to prod the ball into the net

H/T  Nostell Miners Welfare 1  Moorlands 2

The game was always looking to have more goals in it especially as the home side were now playing three up front. But it was Mat Roche who broke the offside trap and with only keeper Ansley facing him the keeper did well to block with his feet. And on 54 minutes the third came for The Moors. Bridge took the ball into the area and unselfishly squared the ball to the unmarked Luke Jennings to sidefoot into the far corner of the net. Curtis then made a great run down the left and his cross fell perfect for Jennings who tried to place his header and only succeeded in totally missing the target, but with 15 minutes left the miss proved costly as Nostell won a dubious corner and from the kick Nicholas pulled one back with a header from close range. Suddenly Moorlands got nervous and Herrick had to make an exceptional stop to keep Scott Minns off the scoresheet, although Jennings could have sealed it by shooting at Ansley from 18 yards out
However the Moorlands were glad to hear the final whistle for an important win that takes them out the drop zone at last

MOORLANDS SUNK BY TWO LATE GOALS

MOORLANDS   2   Shirebrook Town  3

Saturday 17th November

Another disappointing result in a match dominated by the home side. But the problem as so often has been the ability to concede goals against the poorer sides of which Shirebrook were one at the most crucial time. What made this defeat worse was the fact that Moorlands had come from behind to go into the lead and with just 15 minutes to looked comfortable in holding out. manager Darren Dye sprang the surprises of reinstalling Leigh Herrick into goal at the expense of Simon Daniels and  16 year old  Josh Bowden who has been substitute several times this season made the starting line up.

Indeed it was Herrick who saw the first action saving a fierce drive from 25 yards out from Jamie Smith with comfort as the visitors made a lively opening. Craig Bridge operating on the right of midfield should good control cutting inside the fullback and his shot had Gavin Saxby parrying his shot out for a corner, but this was cleared easily.

Shirebrook were using the route one method of football whenever possible but the three forwards they deployed caused few problems for the home defence. However Mark Sherlock did get into a good position but put his effort way over the bar. Although Moorlands were seeing plenty of the ball through Luke Jennings and Chris Gray in the middle of the park it was Darren Dye who had the first opening from a Stuart King corner but headed wide. The same went up for a freekick just on the edge and Bridges kick was deflected for a corner. Shirebrook again cleared their lines and broke forward through the lively Sherlock and his low ball was prodded home off Ryan Porter by Jamie Smith

Moorlands hit back from this setback and Dye just wide from Bowden's fine cross and on 29 minutes the equaliser deservedly arrived. Moorlands 4th corner of the game was headed home by Chris Gray at the far post leaving the game interestingly balanced at the break

Moorlands began the half pressing forward and Jennings had his drive flash inches over the bar with Shirebrook very much on the back foot. and the pressure finally told with 50 minutes gone when substitute Daniel Bent, returning after injury got to the byeline and crossed for Josh Bowden to head home to make the score 2-1..

Shirebrook were now having a good spell having been stung by the turn round of fortunes but the Moorlands defence of Dye and Porter was holding firm without too many problems although Matt Thorpe should have done better than balloon his shot yards over the bar when in a good position. Moorlands were again guilty of giving the ball away cheaply and this led to the visitors equaliser as Mark Sherlock broke into the area to finish low past Herrick with 17 minutes remaining. The home team should have now been looking to hold on for the point, but might have gone back into the lead when Mat Roche scooped a shot over the bar with 8 minutes remaining. But the sting in the tail arrived on 86 minutes when substitute Rob Orton was left too much time and space to pick his spot to score the winner and leave it a miserable week for Moorlands with a double defeat.

Moorlands come out on top in terrific League Cup tie

Shirebrook Town 1 Moorlands 2

NCEL League Cup Round 2

Sat 10th November

This Northern Counties Cup fixture at Shirebrook was a fast and furious entertaining game that certainly not short of incident and kept the crowd enthralled for the whole 120 minutes. Darren Dye opted for an attacking 3-4-3 formation and certainly this paid dividends. A surprise omission was skipper Nick Robinson, but otherwise the team was the same that played in the last three gamesAs early as the first minute the action began when Mat Roche beat martin Rowbotham for pace and with only keeper Gavin Saxby to beat Saxby brought the keeper down but incredulously referee Thornhill denied the penalty and the inevitable red card. However a minute later Roche caused more havoc and this time made no mistake in putting Moorlands in the lead chipping Saxby.. Shirebrook were all at sea and on seven minutes a great ball from Jennings to Roche found the striker in space but ballooned his effort over the bar. However the miss proved costly as the home side equalised on just 8 minutes when a scramble in the area fell to Craig Cantrell who swivelled to sent a fine effort into the far top corner of the net. Moorlands were still attacking in numbers and Stuart King missed a hatrick of opportunities to put his side back into the lead in quick succession First he was well set up by Jennings but put his effort well over the bar, then he had a free header at the far post from a Ryan Porter corner but Saxby made a fine save and then his best chance of the three was a shot from inside the six yard area but Saxby made another great save to deflect for a corner. On 26 minutes King made himself a further chance and this time the striker shot from 20 yards but Saxby stretched to tip over the bar to keep the scores level. The football was flowing although the defensive partnership of Spence and Porter were giving little away as Moorlands were looking the better side . Roche had yet another good chance when a superb flowing move started with Simon Daniels and involve Gray Zuerner and king all linked up down the left and Roche arrived in the area but missed the target  Shirebrook Town  1  Moorlands 1 After the break Lee Widdowson broke through the defence but lifted the ball over the bar. But Moorlands hit back and Bridge forced a corner from which Spence headed wide. Bowden on for Zuerner missed a fine chance miskicking in front of goal as the game was still an open affair. Widdowson then caught Ryan Moon out of position and Daniels made a brilliant stop. The ball ran lose to Rob Orton who could not miss until Spence produced a great tackle. On 68 minutes the visitors might have taken the lead . A Porter corner was headed back to Bridge whose overhead kick hit the base of the post and bounced to safety. Bowden then almost scored flicking inches wide after another flowing move down the right opened up the home defence. Shirebrook were relying on breakaway moves to open up Moorlands but Porter and Spence were standing firm and with quarter of an hour left Roche found Gray free but once again Saxby came to the rescue with a fine tip over the bar. In a rare excursion upfield Widdowson stood face to face with Daniels but the keeper made a great low save and from the deflection somehow kept out Jamie Smith to keep the scores level. . Still looking for the winner Spence joined the attack and was inches wide from 30 yards with the crowd on the edge of their seats. A dramatic final minute might have seen Roche finish it for Moorlands but Roche again hit the post for the second time in the afternoon. And so to extra time but the game continued at the same pace. After two minutes Daniels made another tremendous save from Chris Rhodes, but Moorlands were having none of it and Roches header in reply was cleared off the line. Dean Dye then had a shot palmed away by Saxby as both sides were still pressing for the winner. Dye again took advantage of a slip but shot wide with time running out. Shirebrook were not finished however and Spence had to make another important intervention to stop Smith. But when everyone thought it was going to penalties bridge had other ideas. The striker who had a fine afternoon if not the scoring chances turned on the edge of the area and smashed his shot beyond a helpless Saxby with a quality strike. And that was it as the Referee whistled for end of a terrific match appreciated by all and a credit to both teams, that sets up a league encounter against each other at Newark Road next Saturday. can hardly wait

Moorlands battle to no avail at Sedge

Liversedge 3 Moorlands 1 - Sat 3rd November

Manager Darren Dye will reflect on this result and rightly conclude that the result did not match the performance against a high riding Liversedge side that can feel flattered that they have gained a 3-1 result. Undoubtedly, a draw would have at least been a reward for a battling performance where for periods Moorlands had the better of the possession, but without creating significant chances. For that matter neither did the home side other than in the first ten minutes when Andrew Markham drove high and wide from a good position. But then Moorlands started to settle and enjoyed possession without having the cutting edge to create telling opportunities. indeed on 11 minutes Paul Smith might have opened the scoring for Liversedge but his fierce shot was well beaten away by Simon Daniels The visitors enjoyed more possession with the game settling into the middle of the park. However with 33 minutes gone Moorlands managed to get their noses in front. Chris Gray broke forward and his shot was deflected for the corner. Ryan Porter took the kick and Adam Gilbert got the all important header into the far top corner of the net. But 4 minutes later Liversedge equalised against a static defence. Nicky Boshell forced Daniels into a great save but from the rebound Paul Smith headed home from a yard out as he reacted ahead of the defenders.Moorlands were still in the hunt and Stuart King at last tested keeper Lee Ashforth on 55 minutes cutting inside on the left and from a tight angled shot Ashforth saved with his feet. with the visitors again dictating play Roche really should have put his side ahead when the striker broke through the middle and with only Ashforth to beat the keeper did enough to make a save and save the day. Chris Gray then fizzed a shot wide The miss proved costly to Moorlands as 4 minutes later Paul Smith got his and his teams second. Once again slack defending allowed defender Simon Wood to hit a vicious ground shot that again brought a great save from Daniels but once again the defence were slow and Smith tucked the ball away. With the lively Craig Bridge leading the line the striker went on a mazy run and only a foul on the edge of the box stopped the striker. The freekick from Nick Robinson was disappointing though as the defence cleared. Moorlands then gained a corner and low ball flew across the face of the goal with no forward applying the all important touch. With 3 minutes remaining the home side clinched the game and for the third time of the afternoon Daniels was forced into a superb save and once again the ball was chipped to sub James Coubrough to head the ball in to finish it all offYet again a spirited performance that went without reward and broke the mini run of unbeaten games, but Dye knows that with more commitment the results will come

South Normanton Athletic 1 Moorlands 1
This was a poor game between a South Normanton side desperately trying to regroup after two five Nil defeats and a moorlands side hopefully putting a string of results together. The sum total was an unsightly scrap of a game with little in the way of goalscoring chances and even less on the football front that was a yawn from finish to end. That Moorlands gained a point was thanks to a great inswinging corner from fullback Ryan Porter that evaded all in the area and bounced into the far corner of the net. That the goal was in the 93rd minute summed up the frustration of a game that had little to commend itMoorlands were on the back foot from the start as the home side piled forward and left the visiting defence hacking clear on numerous occasions. Keeper Simon Daniels nothing to do and in fact it was the opposite keeper Ross Whalin who caused the first drama falling to the ground without touching the ball clutching his leg. Possibly wanting to be substituted out of the misery. The keeper then spilt an easy catch but no Moorlands forward was able to take advantage and it came as no surprise when the home side took the lead on 22 minutes with the only chance thus far. Kevin Mushambi hit his shot through a ruck of players past the unsighted Daniels. Zuerner who had been anonymous did have a great chance to equalise as Craig Bridge neatly centred onto the wingers head but Zuerner glanced wide from 6 yards. If the crowd thought the first half was bad then the second half was equally numbing to the fans brains. Moorlands were playing down the slope and South Normanton for some reason decided to shut up shop. However the visitors were still unable to make any inroads into the danger area and over fussing refereeing was not helping the game to flow. With eight minutes remaining the one flash of quality came when Bridge turned his marker and struck a great shot that cannoned off the underside of the bar back into play which nothing less than the striker would have deserved for his endeavours. But with time running out Moorlands were looking down the barrel of yet another away defeat until the saving grace of Porter's corner finding its way in and leaving the home fans and players totally dejectedNot pretty but from a Moorlands point of view another point to the tally and two undefeated games on the bounce. is it the great escape?

Moorlands 3 Winterton Rangers 0
Manager Darren dye was left with a rare smile on his face after his side had pulled off the surprise of the day in comprehensibly overcoming Lincolnshire rivals and second placed Winterton Rangers. as usual there were a number of enforced changes that included Adam Gilbert at the heart of the defence replacing injured mark Hone and Craig Bridge moving in from the left to start up front with Stuart king. Indeed it was Bridge who made the first telling contribution to the game on just five minutes surging down the left and cutting into the penalty area before being brought down by Steve Robinson. From the penalty kick Nick Robinson sent Ben Simpson the wrong way to open the scoring. This set back seemed to wake up the visitors who now poured foreword in numbers and from a Andy Holt break Simon Daniels left his goal to halt the danger, however, Danny Clarke picked up the loose ball and only sound defending prevented the equalizer. Moorlands responded well on 13 minutes King flicked onto Bridge who set up Glen Atkinson and the midfielder was only prevented scoring by the boot of Mat PlantAn entertaining game saw Winterton win five successive corners but resolute defending from Adam Gilbert and Kahmeeze Spence saw them all repelled. But on twenty minutes Winterton should have equalized. Andy Holt broke through the Moorlands defence with Spence in hot pursuit and as the forward about to shoot Spence got in a tremendous tackle to concede another corner. Clarke again found room to shoot on the turn but Daniels superbly saved with an outstretched boot to divert the ball wideTempers were getting a little frayed and Gilbert and Clarke were cautioned after a confrontation, but the football was still flowing. Daniels again came to the rescue making a fine low save to his left from the dangerous Rob Northen. However Winterton chances were becoming fewer with both Spence and Gilbert dominating the visiting forwards H/T  Moorlands 1  Winterton  0 The opening 15 minutes were a bit of an anti-climax as Winterton tried desperately to put Moorlands under pressure with the corners mounting up. But the defence was holding firm and Atkinson was again breaking up many attacks. The outstanding Craig Bridge was causing the Rangers defence problems all afternoon and on 58 minutes the striker deservedly put Moorlands two goals up. receiving the ball in  the left side channel Bridge strode forward past the defender turned inside and drove the ball into the far corner of the net for a superb goalit looked to be all over but Rangers had other ideas and for the next twenty minutes were camped in the Moorlands last third without really troubling Daniels. Holt did roll the ball wide from a tight angle and the same player blazed well over the bar from 25 yards. and as desperation crept in Andy Catton drove at Spence who diverted the ball safely for a corner but to no avail. However with 82 minutes gone Winterton were denied a goal when Andy Holt shot at goal and the ball appeared to be at least two feet over the line before Daniels scooped it away. Despite Rangers protests play was waved on.With two minutes remaining Moorlands deservedly completed the scoring when Robinson's corner found the head of substitute Josh Bowden who rose to power a bullet header into the back of the net to finish off a fine afternoon that might just be the start of a resurgence of fortune after the despair of recent weeks. Undoubtedly the form of Spence, Gilbert, and Bridge was something to savour although in truth this was a superb team performance

Glasshoughton 2 Moorlands 0

The  major talking point of the afternoon after Moorlands slid to the bottom of the NCEL Premier was not so much the football, but more the decisions of a referee that could justifiably be argued that he cost Moorlands the game at Glasshoughton who have now leapfrogged up to second from bottom. Not unexpectedly it was not going to be a game of any great quality and predictably there were few clear-cut chances, but in football you make your own luck and moorlands are certainly not having any at present. Manager Darren Dye's other main problem is the lack of a strike force that will consistently score goals. The task was given to dean Dye and Mat Roche Saturday and it said it all that the home keeper did not have to make a save all afternoon. With mark Hone restored to the side and new signings Glen Atkinson and George Zuerner on loan from Grantham Town, the middle of the park worked well but it was in the final third and with the final pass that everything constantly broke down. 19 year old Atkinson in particular was a revelation in the midfield tackling and trying to be constructive and was clearly Moorlands man-of the-matchBut the defining moments really came in the first half. With ten minutes of a drab half, keeper Simon Daniels was too slow to close the danger of Julian Wilkes down and clattered the striker to the ground. Wilkes took the penalty himself but his effort cannoned off the foot of the post. Five minutes later Glasshoughton won a corner and the ball fell to Chris Croad who thundered a shot at Mark Hone standing barely a yard away. Referee Wilson had no hesitation in pointing to the spot as the ball hit Hones arm and this time Wilkes sent Daniels the wrong way. But before doing so Hone was dismissed for airing his views leaving the team with 10 playersThe second half was little better than the first and Moorlands players seemed a little disorganized with the loss of Hone and Daniels made a fine save.from Wilkes. The keeper was alert again palming away a firmly driven shot. Driven on my Atkinson and having brought Stuart King into the fray Moorlands were looking a bit more threatening and indeed it was King who really should have levelled the scores. Breaking down the right the striker ran 50 yards and with the goal in his sights slammed the ball into the road behind the goal from 6 yards. To prove the inconsistency of the match officials Roche hit a firm shot at the a home central defender two full yards into the penalty area from close range and again the ball hit the defender on the arm. The whistle came and the expectant Moorlands supporters and players expected the official to point to the spot. Not so as the free kick was given two yards outside the area. When your down , your down.To rub salt into the wounds with a minute left Croad crashed a fine shot past Daniels to finish it off but Dye will be left to reflect on the injustice and unfairness of football and match officials when you are bottom

Moorlands 1 Glasshoughton 1

This really should have been three points game set and match at Newark Road against bottom club Glasshoughton but it was missed opportunities in the first half that lost the extra two points in a match that was a typical bottom of the table affair. Rather typically for moorlands the visitors had one shot on goal and scored and rather typically it was again just after the break an all too common occurrence this season. The home side were able to welcome back Mark Hone and Kahmeeze Spence to the heart of the defence and such was their dominance they snuffed out any threat from Glasshoughton. But it was those misses that dominated the first half. With eight minutes gone good linking play down the right saw bridge put an inviting ball into the six yard box but no other forward was within sight. Four minutes later the best chance so far and another fine move down the left involving Stuart King saw the winger find Bridge lurking but his flick onto goal hit the post and the follow up from Dean Dye somehow saw the keeper come across to keep the ball out. Bridge was in the thick of the action and another centre from King found the striker but his shot was deflected as Moorlands should have already been three goals to the good. Chris Gray was moving the ball well down the flanks and a terrific long ball found King all alone at the far post but again he was not able to hit the target with a free header. With the visitors settling down from the onslaught the ball spent allot of the time in the centre of the park although king again missed a good opportunity to open the scoring blazing over from 20 yardsThe breakthrough arrived however on 43 minutes. Ryan Porters free kick from the right of the penalty area was driven onto the head of dean Dye and the strikers header was headed into his own net by Richard Batley H/T Moorlands 1   Glasshoughton Welfare  0 On the resumption and only three minutes into the half the visitors gained an unlikely and undeserved equalizer when the ball arrived to a unmarked Justin Wilkes 20 yards out. The number nine unleashed a fine shot that gave Simon Daniels no chance.Moorlands continued to [press for the winner without causing the Glasshoughton defence too many alarms however, although king once again had a good chance to seal the points and from a Nick Robinson corner Kahmeeze Spence headed narrowly wide. It was nevertheless frustrating for the home side that they were unable to break a resolute defence and in the end had to settle for a point. Moorlands can take heart from the performance particularly with the return fixture next Saturday at Castleford where hopefully all three points will be coming back to

Parkgate 3 Moorlands 1
Despite the inclusion of ex-Lincoln City defender mark Hone and new signing Chris Gray it was the same old story for Moorlands of promising much in the first half and running out of steam in the second at Parkgate. The real killer though  were goals a minute either side of halftime that thoroughly deflated the visitors and were it not for some superb saves from Simon Daniels in goal this would have been a far more comprehensive defeat. Parkgate took the game by the scruff from the outset and Daniels had to make a fine save from as early as the third minute and two minutes later Mark Cooper had a fierce drive blocked. Hone was winning some crucial challenges at the back and a good ball forward to Ryan Porter saw the midfield player have his shot deflected for a corner when a goal looked likely. With Moorlands coming back into the game Craig Bridge who was seeing little of the ball delivered a great centre to the diving Nick Robinson whose header hit the ground before looping over the bar to spurn a another fine chance. With more cohesion through the middle Hone again found Bridge and the winger neatly turned inside to drive wide.As so often though Moorlands began to sit back and let the opposition take control and Somerville again had Daniels making a good save tipping the ball over the bar. The home side lost Cooper and Morwood through injury but this only seemed to spur Parkgate on and with a minute to half time opened the scoring from a long centre from the right headed in by Somerville H/T  pargate 1  Moorlands 0 Immediately on the resumption it became two the pacey Mat Outram got the better of Adam Gilbert along the touchline  cut inside and executed a superb lob into the far corner of the net giving Daniels no chance. The visitors were really on the back foot and Adam fretwell drove a low freekick low to Daniels right but the keeper saved well.. Mat Roche who had been rarely involved did set up Chris Gray at the other end who should have hit the target but this was a rare foray forward. On 49 minutes Ryan Johnson should have made it three but shot into the side netting when well placed as the pargate forwards had oceans of space and used it well. . A minute later Darren Dye kicked off the line from Cheetham in a game that was becoming one sided. Gray again missed in front of goal but parkgate substitute Darren Green had Daniels making another fine save when another goal looked likely.. Daniels was again to the rescue with Somerville flicking on at the near post and somehow the keeper kept the ball out the net. With time running out Pargate were coming forward again and the keeper made two brilliant double saves at the feet of Johnson to keep the score down . From the resulting corner however the defence failed to clear to allow Somerville to rifle the ball into the top corner of the net. With just two minutes left a Robinson corner was met at the far post by the impressive Hone to bullet a header for a consolation goal on his debut and well deserved it was.. Bridge did make Bonnington tip over the bar from 35 yards but by then Moorlands were well beaten

Ely City 3 Moorlands 3
It took Daniel Bent first goal of the season to rightfully earn Moorlands an FA Vase replay on Tuesday night, in an entertaining affair totally dominated by the Lincoln side. However, moorlands made hard work of a game where they had to come from behind three times although missed chances were rally the story of the afternoon. As early as the first minute Bent might have snatched the lead with a good turn but shot wide and only a minute later bridge was bundled over in the area but penalty appeals were waived away. Brown for the home side swung the ball into Robbie mason but the attacker header well over as the game was end to end. With seven minutes gone Bent was unable to connect with Moorlands dominating.. Luke Jennings came close to scoring with a overhit cross from 40 yards that had home keeper lee Pacey struggling to tip over the bar. But against the run of play on 16 minutes Ely took the lead. A corner from the right by Tom Pell was hit to the far post and Manager Darren Dye headed into his own net. The lead only lasted for 11 minutes though as a well flighted corner from Nick Robinson gave Ryan Porter an easy chance to head homeEly's set pieces were the main cause of Moorlands problems and another corner was fortunate not to be connected with. It was then the turn of Bridge, having a fine game to set up Ryan Porter who made the keeper parry the ball wide of the goal. H/T  Ely City 1  Moorlands 1 After the interval Moorlands were caught napping again from a set piece corner. The ball was sent to the far post and with Simon Daniels and Dave Wardie struggling to get to it Ben Lawrence nodded over the line to make it 2-1Bridge showed great skill and sent on a low ball to Bent but scuffed his shot wide with the goal gaping as Moorlands tried to hit back. Daniels had to tip a fierce drive over the bar from Pell, but with ten minutes remaining moorlands levelled once more. Sean Frecklingtons knock into the area was handled by Lawrence and referee Stobbard had no hesitation in awarding the spot kick that was duly converted by Nick Robinson. mat Roche might have put Moorlands in the lead when a great ball in from Jennings left the striker with a free header but Pacey blocked with his legs to concede a corner then again tried his luck with a freekick from twenty yards as moorlands were pouring forward in search of the winner and Pacey had to scramble the ball away in a goalmouth scramble And so to extra time and Robinson played a superb 30 yard ball into the stride of Roche but the forward was denied by a last ditch tackle. Disaster struck on the stroke of half time when Lawrence's long through was not properly cleared to Pell on the edge of the area and his low drive went through a ruck of players to land in the net off the inside of the post.legs were tired but Ely were more intent on clinging on to their lead and paid the price with 2 minutes remaining with the ball falling to bent who swept the ball home. A grandstand finish nearly made it safe for the visitors when another corner fell to Bridge whose drive was blocked on the line, but honours remained even for the replay on Tuesday night at Newark Road

Armthorpe 3 Moorlands 2
The same old story of a season so far that has seen one win and two draws in a start that sees the team hold on for the first half but then collapses in the second. And so it was at Armthorpe with whom Moorlands had secured a creditable draw just a week ago. The mere fact however that a constantly changing side is interrupting any flow clearly has not helped and once again whilst the team has been slow to settle in the early stages, Moorlands fell behind as early as the tenth minute. A fast raid down the right flank saw Britteon cross low into the 6 yard box and slow reactions allowed Liam Radford a simple tap in. Time and time again Armthorpes pace down the flanks and through the middle engineered by the impressive Radford and Paul Ashton cause all sorts of problems as Nick Robinson tried to get his own side forward where Daniel Bent and Mat Roche were getting little change out of a firm defence. Nevertheless on 23 minutes the equalizer did arrive with a good ball to the far post and Mat Roche turned nicely to drive home into the far corner beyond Fraser,s reach. Ross Fleming might have conceded a penalty with a poor challenge on Radford but the referee waived play on. Dramatically, on 36 minutes the home side were reduced to 10 men when Craig Morley was given a straight red rather harshly for what the referee saw as a two footed challenge on Barnard. The full back recovered but struggled again with the pace of Preston who cut inside and really should have scored. H/T  Armthorpe 1  Moorlands  1 Further drama arrived 10 minutes after the break . Danysz was clearly 10 yards offside but the flag stayed down and with Daniels committed the winger laid the ball across goal to Nick Page who with no defender in sight and an open goal contrived to miss from 2 yards out. Surely the miss of this or any other season! But Armthorpe's superiority along with an injury to Daniels paid off just after the hour As radford scored his second with a firm shot from the edge of the area. The home side pressed forwards and Paul Hodds did well to stop Parker, but from the corner the very impressive skipper nathan Iley bulleted a header high into the net from 12 yards. The skipper then turned sinner seven minutes later handling in his own area and again harshly Iley was red cared having previously picked up a caution. Nick Robinson stepped up for the penalty to send Fraser the wrong way, as fleetingly Moorlands might just pull it back. However Armthorpe threw men behind the ball and few forays forward were permitted to Moorlands although Robinson did sidefoot well wide from 25 yardsThree more goals conceded an injury to keeper Simon Daniels and disillusionment all round. When is it to end especially with the FA vase round the corner? And if you cant beat 9 men ?

Moorlands 2 Armthorpe 2
Moorlands put in one of their best displays so far this season in a thoroughly entertaining and absorbing game that sets the scene for next Saturdays return encounter. With new loan signings veteran keeper Simon Daniels and winger Stuart King, both from Spalding United making their debuts the side had a strong look about it. It was Armthorpe that made the early running and Kahmeeze Spence had to make a last ditch tackle as Liam Radford made himself space. On two minutes Mat Roche for Moorlands might have opened the scoring forcing keeper Andy Pettinger into a low save. Armthorpe hit back and again slack marking allowed Radford to lob both Daniels and thankfully the bar. It was end to end and furious and Ryan Porter's freekick found Nick Robinson lurking and his drive brought a fine save from Pettinger. Both sides were spreading the ball about with style and the visiting attackers were using great pace to open up the home defence, but with Spence again in fine form it was still stalemate. Robinsons corner then forced John McDermott to slice dangerously close to his own goal and after all this action after just ten minutes Luke Jennings flicked onto Adam Gilbert who brought a fine save from the keeper However disaster struck on 14 minutes with Bruno Holden outpacing Jamie Stokes on the left before turning inside to lob Daniels into the far corner of the net. Two minutes later Moorlands seemed to be buried when this time Radford beat freckington on the right and drove beyond Daniels for the second. The game now settled down into a midfield battle for supremacy with Moorlands using both flanks but never really creating danger in the final third until seven minutes from the break a good ball into the six yard area gave dean Dye the chance to tap in from close range to pull one back

H/T  Moorlands 1  Armthorpe Welfare 2

The second half started with the home strikers pressing forward lifted by the goal before half time and Roche had Pettinger in action again grabbing the ball low to his right. Robinson then tried his luck from 25 yards but was way over the bar. However the breakthrough came with 62 minutes gone. The was played into the skipper and in turning his marker was brought down in the area with Referee Brittain immediately pointing to the spot. Robinson gave the keeper no chance with his kick to level the scores.Going in search of the winner Stuart King hit the post from two yards out from a Roche flick on and substitute Josh Bowden had the keeper making another good save. King had another good opportunity to seal the points but miskicked in front of goal as the game built up to a finale. Armthorpe were finding it difficult to break forward and when they did Steve Rock shot across goal and James walker hit the sidenetting although his effort was covered by Daniels. With time running out Bowden thought he had found the winning shot as he unleashed a terrific volley from 18 yards that looked a goal all the way. However Pettinger produced a stunning tip over the bar to keep the scores level in a very entertaining game that was a credit to both sides and excellently officiated by Referee Gary Brittain

Eccleshill 3 Moorlands 1
Eccleshill is not one of the better grounds that Moorlands will visit this season especially as the pitch was hard bumpy and undulated in a most alarming manner in one goalmouth. Along with a stiff breeze from one end of the pitch, this was never going to be a great game of football. In actual fact the first half was dire and half time came as a relief as neither team were able to raise the tempo and to actually have a meaningful shot on goal. Passes were constantly going astray from both sides and with the ball difficult to control and the home striker Cameron Kerin persistently seeing fit to run offside at every opportunity it made for poor viewing. These are frustrating days for Manager Darren Dye and he was still unable to field a full team. Ryan Porter who returned at central defence did get the ball upto Jon Bell on 17 minutes, who in turn set up mat Roche to volley well over the bar. But it was the home side who had the first and only real chance of the half, when central defender Luke Ruff found space for a free header but predictibably was well off target. At that point he decided to leave the game injured, possibly a wise choice given the nature of proceedings. Herrick did have to make an easy save from Gary Birchall, However that was the sum total of excitement for the half H/T  Eccleshill Utd 0 Moorlands 0 Two minutes after the resumption the home side lifted the game from its slumbers by taking the lead. With the Moorlands defence caught square Andy Philp found the ball at his feet and raced forward with Herrick closing the angle. Philp expertly lobbed the keeper from 30 yards and the ball drifted into the net. Stung into action Moorlands equalised seven minutes later Mat Roche fed Luke Jennings and the winger should have scored but instead a defender forced the corner. Nick Robinson flag kick found the stooping head of Jon Bell to head home The home side were putting pressure on down the flanks without really causing a threat and the standard of football was improving at last. Regrettably for Moorlands another piece of quality saw the home side take the lead . A corner out on the left fell to Gary Birchall who volleyed whilst falling through a ruck of players into the netThe visitors were finding it hard to make any headway now and fell further behind on 79 minutes. Liam Serrant cut inside and mishit his shot at herrick. But the keeper let the ball bobble over him into the net to seal the points. Mat Roche might have pulled one back with time running out volleying wide from close range , but that was it , another three goals conceded mainly from poor mistakes and a long trip home to reflect on where to go next

Moorlands 0 Selby Town 3
Manager Darren Dye needs to be trying to convince his players they are capable of competing at this level after the visit of Selby Town consigned his side to a second successive defeat at Newark Road. Most would agree that for the remainder of the 85 minutes after conceding a 5th minute goal his side were well on top and only the lack of the killer instinct in front of goal prevented at least a point out of this game that was often quite entertaining. Dye's cause has not been helped by the absence of key players once again - this time 4 players who might have made the difference and resulted in the unusual sight of Adam Gilbert in midfield. Selby started strongly and the inexperience of Stokes at full back was exposed as early as the 5th minute when the pacy Lee took the ball out left before cutting the ball low into the six yard box. Adam Russell evaded the defenders to clip the ball past Herrick. Not a good opening for the home side. Bell had a good opening created for him from the hardworking Bent but keeper Ross did enough to force the corner. The home side were bossing the middle of the park and were using the pace of Lund down the left to good effect. Selby had no option but to try long ball tactics but new boy Spence was commanding in the air. Chances were few and far between though with Herrick now a spectator and not until 23 minutes did the next chance come to Robinson who volleyed well over. Jennings having a quiet game also had a volleyed effort from 20 yards but was unable to hit the target H/T  Moorlands 0 Selby Town 1 On the resumption Moorlands carried on from where they left off and Bell had a great chance to equalise. Breaking the offside trap the striker was well clear but Ross came out too quickly and blocked the shot. Chances like this must be taken and although lost Moorlands were still pressing forward. Lund got on the end of Gilbert's knockdown but was off target, as Selby were being pinned back into their own halfOn 61 minutes Bell again missed a Jennings ball into the near post when he couldn't stretch far enough to get the final touch. There was more frustration with Moorlands all over Selby and a Robinson freekick was glanced wide by Spence. It seemed the equaliser was only minutes away and young striker Josh Bowden was thrown into the fray at the expense of Gilbert to claw the deficit backUnfortunately on a rare attack on 83 minutes Herrick's poor throw out only fell to the feet of Dawson who sealed the points by drilling the ball easily beyond the crestfallen keeper. With two much to do the visitors rubbed salt into the wounds with a third with Loukes unchallenged able to beat Herrick low to his right.Three goals was harsh on the home team who must believe in themselves and leaving Dye disappointed. The stark reality is 9 goals conceded in 3 League games and he must know there is alot to do for Mondays home game with Pickering Town

Deeping Rangers 5 Moorlands 0
Moorlands went into this FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round tie with County rivals Deeping Rangers with only nine fit players, with three on the bench that were never going to set foot on the pitch. Dean Dye started although he was still suffering the effects of a facial injury as did Paul Hodds who is suffering a groin problem. That Moorlands held out for the first 45 minutes showed steel and determination and in fact it could be argued the visitors had the better of the first half restricting Deeping to two long range free kicksAs early as the 2nd minute a Roche delivery fro  the right had Robinson's header saved by Bircham  and 4 minutes later Gilbert again had the keeper making a good save before Roche hooked over the bar from the rebound. Robinson then tried his luck with two long range volleys went well over the bar with Moorlands having a good spell. Niggly refereeing from Mr McCloud was upsetting the flow but with 23 minutes gone Herrick made a fine tip over from Cobb. Bell then used his pace for Moorlands to get in a telling cross to the feet of Roche whose shot was blocked in front of goal. Herrick again had to come to the rescue pushing Cobbs freekick over the bar H/T  Deeping Rangers 0 Moorlands Railway  0 On the resumption Moorlands should have taken the lead when Lund broke free and with the keeper to beat rolled the ball wide of the net. A price was paid for this miss as on 53 minutes Deeping took the lead Hodds was adjudged to fouled in the area and Stevenson rammed home the penalty. Two minutes later it got worse with Banks showing pace and skill to turn the defence inside out before shooting wide of Herrick for number 2. With Deeping now in control Cobb missed the target by inches and Ellis broke forward to have Herrick make the save. On 69 minutes Banks again broke through the middle for number three and on 73 minutes Hodds was again adjudged to have fouled Matson, an absurd decision , for a penalty allowed Stevenson to score his second from the spot. Four minutes later. Deeping completed the rout a minute later when substitute  Jones had an easy task to shoot home from 25 yards with the defence completely opened upA black day for Manager Darren Dye but in fairness with 8 players missing with injury and having to play two who were not fit the task was always uphill against a team as good as Deeping

NEW BOY SPENCE MARKS DEBUT WITH EQUALIZER
Moorlands Railway 3 Hallam FC 3 - 11th August
The season opened at Newark Road with a pulsating affair that left Moorlands with a well deserved draw from their first ever Premier Division fixture with much fancied Hallam Fc.  Manager Dye was able to include new signing Kahmeez Spence a deadline signing from  Bourne Town at right back, otherwise with the exception of Mat Roche the side was at full strengthBoth teams took time to settle on a hot afternoon, and the first controversy was when Hallam's Tomlinson clearly handballed before rifling narrowly wide, however the offence was missed by the officials. But on 6 minutes O'Maha almost grabbed the lead for the visitors but his powerful drive was well blocked. At the other end Lund found space on the left but keeper Scaife closed down the winger quickly to concede the corner Moorlands received a lift with just 13 minutes gone when they took the lead. Bent worked hard down the right and his ball across goal was turned in by left back Ryan Porter with his right foot. Stung by this turn of events Hallam put pressure on with three successive corners, none of which caused the home defence any problems. Indeed it was Spence who moved up and his header was tipped onto the bar by Scaife. Minutes later Bent turned sharply but his shot was to soft to trouble the keeper. With 31 minutes gone Hallam were all square. Tomlinson turned Gilbert and his shot across Herrick crept in with the keeper not able to push the ball hard enough round the post. Three minutes later the same player made it two brushing aside the challenge to finish giving Herrick no chance. In a final flurry Bainbridge shot against the bar from an angle   H/T  Moorlands Railway 1  Hallam 2   With Frecklington on for the injured Jennings, it was Hallam who were on the attack and a foul just outside the home penalty area had Carrington driving against the wall. Herrick then had to make a fine save from Tomlinson low to his left with Moorlands struggling to get a grip. Lund did break down the right and his shot at the near post was smothered by Scaife, but with a breakaway Hallam went further ahead and again it was Tomlinson who picked his spot from close range to complete his hattrick. The scoreline seemed to be unjust at this point and it was Ryan Porter who again broke wide down the left linking with bent . Porter delivered the cross to the far post and Lund rose to head into the far corner to make the score 2-3. A pulsating match was seeing plenty of good football from both sides and Herrick again came to the rescue to make a point blank save from Bainbridge. However with confidence still high the equalizer came on 63 minutes Robinson delivering a pinpoint freekick from the right and new boy Spence got ahead of his marker to firmly head home. Coupland then had a volley straight at Scaife as the home team went in search of the winner and Lund was again brought down but the freekick was wasted. The game though came to an end with honours even and a thoroughly enjoyable afternoons football. There were eleven heroes for Moorlands out there none more so that Daniel Bent subsequently named Man-of-the-match for the home side
